Topic of the Month: Adaptability and Resiliency

Re-Imagining Resilience – How current views of resilience are doing more harm than good

In recent years, the concept of resilience has become ubiquitous in discussions surrounding trauma, adversity, and mental health and wellness. However, what if the ways we are applying resilience and the value we ascribe to it are actually doing more harm than good, especially for those who embody the trait most clearly? In this presentation, the traditional narrative surrounding resilience will be examined, and the application of the concept through current methodology and approaches will be challenged. Drawing from research and real-life case studies, the limitations of resilience-focused approaches and why they may, at best, do only half the job, abandoning many just as healing and growth should begin, will be explored. Alternative approaches for teaching resilience as a skillset that are empowerment-based, rooted in trauma-informed principles, and place resilience on the continuum of healing and growth instead of at the end of it will be introduced. New strategies to go beyond resilience-centric work that embrace inclusivity and inner wisdom will also be discussed. Attendees will leave with new approaches for cultivating resilience and a new perspective on its limitations and the role it should play in growth, healing, and overall wellness.

Featured Speaker:

MylestoGo Founder, Nichole Myles is a 20+ year veteran in education, nonprofits, and leadership. She leverages her personal resilience and experience as a DV survivor who lost everything and her expertise, which includes a master’s degree in i/o psychology, certifications in Trauma/Resilience, DEI, and Integrated Behavioral Health to inspire wellness through story, facilitation, and creativity. Nichole’s areas of expertise include post-traumatic growth, self-care and resilience, trauma-informed approaches, and expressive arts for healing. She excels at creating what she refers to as the tools to turn trauma into transformation –  accessible techniques and frameworks that foster a diverse, personalized approach to rebuilding and growth.  Myles also runs Nicki Scribbles, where her alter ego creates and sells whimsical watercolor works and other art designed to be accessible for all. She is a contributing author to Breaking the Silence – Stories of Survivors and has written and illustrated her first children’s book, Nicki Scribbles. TEDx talk, Lessons I’ve Learned from the People who don’t like Me, has been viewed over 90,000 times. Whether speaking from the stage, consulting with an organization, or working 1:1, Nichole uses her many modalities to empower her clients to become ‘radically well’, moving them from ‘survivorship’ to ‘thrivorship.’
