Topic of the Month: Effective Self-Advocacy

What is Collaborate for Success Huddle?
Once a month, The Koa Club hosts an online Huddle for our Premium Members. This huddle provides a safe and encouraging space for professionals to engage in honest, supportive and thought-provoking discussions. We dive into topics that are highly relevant to professionals as they navigate the ever-evolving challenges and opportunities in their work and personal lives.  We often invite a special guest to help lead the discussions in each of the Collaborate for Success Huddle event.

Being the Introvert In The Workplace

Carl Jung, the founder of analytic psychology, is acknowledged as the first person to use the terms “introvert” and “extrovert.”  He identified people as one or the other based on how they re-energized. In the workplace, however, behavior tends to be the determining factor as to whether someone is deemed an introvert or extrovert, which can be a mistake.  The conversant, energetic, talkative storyteller who enjoys center stage is assumed to be an extrovert, which isn’t necessarily true if this outgoing person needs to be alone to get re-energized. When we talk about psychological safety in the workplace, introverts tend to struggle the most with feeling safe. Companies preach employees to “show up as your authentic self,” but when we show up as non-social,  employees who simply come to work, do our jobs and leave, we are often labeled as awkward and unapproachable. Why does it matter? Because every workplace is a mosaic of people who have different talents, personality styles, strengths and weaknesses, and each person processes information differently. So if you feel like you don’t understand the introvert, or you ARE the introvert in your workplace, join us to talk about why it matters so much.
